Walks ending at Ambleside 13th September 2025
Bob is leading the A walk which is approximately 9.2 miles and 2300 ft.
We will follow pleasant and infrequently used paths over Wansfell and up Woundale, a remote branch of the Troutbeck valley. From Waterhead we ascend through Skelghyll Wood, soon reaching an open grassy path to the top of Wansfell. Crossing the "tourist" path from Ambleside to Troutbeck, we follow the north ridge to the Kirkstone Pass road, with excellent views N and W. We then follow a narrow path to the head of Woundale and our highest point, St Raven's Edge, 593 m. A steep but short descent to Kirkstone Pass is followed by an easy walk down "The Struggle" and a pleasant track with good views down Stock Ghyll to Ambleside.
David & Mary are leading the B walk which is approximately 7 1/2 – 8 miles and 1400 feet.
Starting from the centre of Ambleside we walk down to the River Rothay and along the main road towards Clappersgate where we take a 400 feet steepish climb on to Loughrigg Fell. The next couple of hours will be spent winding our way across to the other end, passing at least seven tarns (though two had dried out when we did the recce!), and looking down at 6 different lakes. From the trig point we descend to Loughrigg Terrace where we turn towards Ambleside, passing the caves, the shore, Rydal Church, Rydal Hall grounds and Lower Sweden Bridge. If it is wet, we will choose a different descent from Loughrigg.
Paul is leading the C walk which will be approximately 6 ¼ miles and 800 feet. No stiles.
A circuit of Loughrigg. We start at Scandale Bridge and follow the track to Rydal Hall (probable tea shop stop). Crossing over the main road we walk along the south shore of Rydal Water to Loughrigg Terrace for views over Grasmere. At the top we turn to High Close hostel, then along easy paths to overlook Loughrigg Tarn (with a chance to paddle if the sun is out). We continue up our only real "climb" of the day (300 feet) around the foot of Ivy Crag for a view over Windermere, then drop down to finish in Ambleside.
