Standing proud at the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales, Richmond is one of Britain’s most beautiful and vibrant market towns. With it’s iconic 11th century Norman castle ruins which look down from a hilltop to guard the valley of the River Swale. It’s massive keep is 100 feet high and it’s walls are amongst the oldest surviving military walls in the country.
The town is an attractive blend of twisting alleyways, fine historic buildings and sweeping cobbled market place where there is the Holy Trinity Church, one of the most curious churches in Britain. Until 1971 there were shops beneath the north aisle and one half of it is now the headquarters and museum of the Green Howard’s Regiment. You will also find a host of individual shops, tempting eateries and exciting cultural heritage attractions to explore and discover. Off the market place is a Georgian Theatre of 1788.
