Walks ending at Caldbeck 28th September 2025

If you have not heard of Caldbeck or been there, it is a delightful village close to the northern fells of the Lake District. The fells are just to the north of Skiddaw and Blencathra, with lots of easy grassy paths for walking, and clear views to Scotland. One of the tourist attractions of Caldbeck are the waterfalls and ruins of a Bobbin Mill called 'The Howk'. The B & C groups will be visiting them. And you can finish either at the famous 'Muddy Duck' cafe &/or the Oddfellows Arms.

The 'A' walk will be led by Andy and is approximately 10 – 11 miles and 2500 feet.

The walk begins in Caldbeck and passes though countryside for a couple of miles before

reaching the sleepy hamlet of Fellside. From near here we begin our long but gradual ascent of Brae Fell which is our first Wainwright of the day. From here it is a fairly simple ascent to Great Scarfell and then the flattish top of Knott. At this point one can expect some boggy conditions to the bothy of Lingy Hut where we pick up a much nicer path to High Pike. This is well worth the effort as the 360 degree views from High Pike are outstanding and one can even avail themselves of the bench seat to rest. From here it is a 90 minute walk back to Caldbeck.

The 'B' walk will be led by Lesley and is approximately 9 ½ miles and 1800 feet.

From Caldbeck we go first to 'The Howk' and then continue on to Caldbeck Fell over Low Pike and High Pike (highest point) over undulating field paths and roads. We will take our time going up High Pike which has a cairn and slate seat (hopefully, that is still there!). We then go down to Harestones and continue our descent over Red Covercloth passing grouse butts on our way to Whitewell Hill. Here we turn right going towards Hudscales and Nether Row. We pick up the Cumbria Way and wind our way back into Caldbeck via Townhead and Cat Crags.

The 'C' walk has 'D' alternatives (ending either at Caldbeck or 'The Howk').

David is leading Tony's walk which is approximately 6 miles and 650 feet or 3 – 4 miles and 400 feet.

The first half of the walk is mostly along the Cumbria Way following the river Caldew, and then the river Cald Beck, often in woodland. Arriving at Caldbeck, we will then proceed to 'The Howk'. There is a lot about the 'Bobbin Mill' which we can peruse and enjoy, in addition to the waterfalls which are in spate. The C walk will continue alongside the river Whelpo Beck for a short distance before taking a higher and circular route which give us the best views of the day, to bring us back into Caldbeck.
