Walks ending in Dent 1st October 2023
It is always a delight to visit Dent with its narrow cobbled streets and 19th century market town feel. Here are the walks:
The A walk will be led by Bob. It is 12.0 miles with 2100 ft of ascent.
Walkers visiting Whernside almost invariably start from the Ribblehead side, but we will take the much more pleasant (in my opinion) and quiet route starting and ending in Dent. We will only meet the hordes of "three peakers" for about 2 miles on the summit ridge. Most of the walk will be on quiet tracks and grassy paths with excellent views. We start with a short ascent up Flinter Gill, then join Green Lane, which contours round the flanks of Great Coum and above Deepdale. After a short stretch of the Ingleton-Dent road we begin our main ascent onto Whernside, fairly steep but grassy. Thereafter, it is all gently downhill, following the Dales High Way and Dales Way, with excellent views down Dentdale and a little riverside walking into Dent.
The B walk will be led by Glynis. It is just over 9 miles and around 1100ft of ascent, over 3 climbs.
It will start in Sedbergh taking the footpath from the centre of the village to Milthrop. From there we will take The Dalesway past Hewthwaite, Burton Hill and Leakses coming out on the Dent Road. Bit of road walking next and we will need to take care as the road is quite narrow. We leave the road at Helmside and go up the steep path onto Sropes Moss, Long Moor and Long Moor Moss to reach Frostrow. For much of this path there are fantastic views towards the Howgills. At Side Farm we will join the Dales Highway which goes alongside Holebeck Gill and eventually comes down to Lunds where we will walk down the farm track to BarthBridge and then along the river Dee and into Dent.
The C walk will be led by Lesley. It is just under 7 miles and approximately 480 ft of ascent.
We start at the bridge just after Sedbergh on the Dent road. We pick up the Dales Way & walk up the road into Millthrop - a lovely village with lots of beautiful gardens! We follow the Dales Way uphill which we will take our time doing & follow to Gap Wood to Gap & onto Hewthwaites down to Leakses meeting the road at Craggs Farm. We walk down the Wood to road carefully to Low Mire House & pick up path towards the river Dee and then follow this round to Mon.
Again, we meet the road & follow to Barth Bridge after which we pick up a "quiet road" passing High Hall & onto Church Bridge. Turn Right & then left after crossing the bridge & follow the path alongside the river on the Dales Way & a small section on the Pennine Way before turning back to walk back towards the Bridge where we turn Left to walk into Dent village.
A lovely walk with one main hill and a few undulations & not many Stiles!
