Walks ending at Dockray 24th May 2025
The A Walk will be led by Glynis and is over 11.5 miles and about 2500 feet.
This is quite a strenuous walk in places and is a circular from Dockray. The walk is a circular from Dockray and starts with fields and lane to pick up the 'Old Coach Road' which is now a footpath and have around an hour of easy walking with lovely views before turning off to climb Clough Head. Parts of this are steep but the views are worth it. We will descend to Calfhow Pike for lunch and then start the second climb of the day to the top of Great Dodd. Great Dodd has two summits and we will visit both, then descend over Matterdale Common and take the footpath to Dowthwaite Head. From there field and woodland paths take us back down to the road and into Dockray.
The B walk will be led by David and is approximately 8.5 miles and 1600 feet.
This is also a circular from Dockray. We are taking advantage of starting over 1000 feet high, that will enable us to get up to the high fells at 2500 feet. We begin with easy walking to Dowthwaite Head, and then take 1300 feet climb slowly and in stages to Hart Side. Going along towards White Stones, we make our descent with stunning views over Sheffield Pike and Ullswater. The path around Glencoyne Head is slow and difficult at times, eventually coming out to easy fell paths over Watermillock Common, and back down into Dockray.
The C walk will be led by Bob and is 6.4 miles and 1100 feet.
There is an easy "escape" to Dockray which reduces the length and height by about 20%.
This is a linear walk from Glenridding to Dockray. There are 3 sections of contrasting character. The first is an easy lakeside path passing Glencoyne Bridge to Aira Force car park, mostly in woodland. The second is by delightful paths past Aira Force, keeping close to the river, and on to Ulcat Row, passing the "escape". The final section is by quiet lanes and paths to Thornythwaite and Green How, the highest point with lovely open views, and an easy descent by Aira Beck to Dockray.
