Walks ending at High Bentham 19th January 2025
All 3 walks will be visiting the 'Great Stone of Fourstones' (photo below). It is over 5 meters high, and there are steps on the other side for the adventurous to climb. It is a glacial erratic. The other three stones were probably broken up for building stone, though legend has it that they were thrown by the devil at Devil's bridge, Kirkby Lonsdale!
The A walk will be led by Bob, approximately 10 ½ miles and 1000 ft.
It is a circular walk from High Bentham, beginning with a pleasant riverside stroll to Low Bentham. We then visit the fringes of Bowland, passing Lowgill above the remote Hindburn valley, and the Great Stone, mostly on farmland and quiet lanes with a short excursion onto the open fells. With luck we will get the good views of Ingleborough and Whernside. We return along various lanes and farmland to High Bentham.
The B walk will be led by Lesley, approximately 8 miles and 900ft.
From High Bentham, we go through to Cowslip Hill, Ridding Lane and over to Staggarth. At Mewith Lane, we take the path up to Holly Tree, Fairfield House, Fourstones Barn and then onto the Great Stone of Fourstones. Our return to High Bentham is via Slaidburn Road, Aikengill Road, Rantreefold Road, Whitepits Lane, Fleet Green, Oakhead, Oakbank eventually coming onto Mill Lane. Near Clouds Bank we take a footpath along the side of the River Wenning which leads us back to Bentham Bridge not too far from the local pubs & refreshments!
The C walk will be led by Jeff, approximately 5 miles and 550ft.
Starting from Lowgill School, we walk over farmland to Foss bank and Beethams, crossing Ramtree Fold Rd and Whitepitts Lane, to walk to Fourstones Barn and up to the Great Stone of Fourstones. The return to High Bentham is via Lane Head, Holly trees, crossing Memwith lane, to Sunnybank, Staggarth and to Bentham Bridge. It is mostly pastureland, woodland and tracks.
