Walks ending in Keswick 17th September 2023

Keswick. Morecambe HF Rambling

Everyone will see Catbells and Derwentwater from some vantage point.

Andy is leading the A walk. It is approximately 12.25 miles with 2800 ft of ascent.

The main objective of this walk is Skiddaw - England’s 4th highest mountain at 3053 feet. It will start at Threlkeld and follow the very pleasant track of the Cumbrian Way Path passing the east peak of Lonscale up to Skiddaw House Hostel which claims to be Britain’s highest hostel at 1550 feet. From there it is a grassy path over Sale How until we get to the southern aspects of Skiddaw which then joins a good path to the summit. Although this is a climb of about 1500 feet, it is not steep and we will take our time. If the conditions are clear the views will be amazing and well worth the effort. From the summit we will track back and then pass over Skiddaw Little Man where we will pick up the tourist path back to Keswick.  If all is going well, we should also have time to visit the summit of Latrigg for all those Wainwright baggers.

Bob is leading the B walk. It is 8 miles with 1400 ft of ascent.

We will start at Threlkeld and follow easy paths and tracks with no significant difficulties, so plenty of opportunities to take in the glorious views over the Vale of Keswick, Derwent Water, Borrowdale and the hills beyond. We go past Blencathra Centre and follow the path up the valley on the flanks of Blease Fell, then join the Cumbria way for most of the rest of the walk. The views open up as we round the flanks of Lonscale Fell (lunch break?) We briefly join the "tourist route" coming down from Skiddaw, make a small detour to Latrigg (sometimes called "the cub of Skiddaw"), then continue the descent to Keswick.

Roger is leading the C walk. It is a 7mile walk with 900 ft of ascent.

We start from the main road at Portinscale, walk along a private lane/footpath over Fawe Park along to the bottom of Catbells, then lower Catbells path down to the road where the ice cream van often parks. Now we follow the lower path to Brandlehow bay, by the water’s edge paths to Hawes End. From here it is along the Cumbria way passing Portinscale and back to Keswick.

Highest point about 750ft :accumulative height approx. 900ft over the whole walk.

Always a nice walk in this area with superb views.
