Walks ending at Kirkby Lonsdale 1st March 2025
The A walk will be led by Joan & Mary. Approximately 10 miles and 1500 feet.
We start at the Devils Bridge and walk up through the Holiday Park to High Casterton. Walking steadily uphill along a quiet lane in an easterly direction we reach open country. We then turn in a northerly direction to reach the highest point of the day: Brownthwaite Pike. We head back down to near Bull Pot Farm and Barbondale where we will have lunch by the river. We then walk along the riverside skirting around Barbon crossing fields until we reach Casterton. By the time we reach the village we are close to Devils Bridge. It is our suggestion that rather than walking down to Devils Bridge and then into Kirkby Lonsdale, we stop for a drink in the Pheasant Pub (20 mins to the bridge) or at the Golf Club where there is an excellent tea shop (15 minutes from the bridge).
The B walk will be led by Bob. Approximately 9 miles and1400 ft of ascent, mostly on easy gradients.
We start just after Jct 36 and follow the Lancaster Canal a short distance to Farleton, then ascend the north side of Farleton Fell. We then follow the open fell side by Newbiggin Crag and go down to cross the Burton - Hutton Roof road. We then follow a marked trail up through woodland and scrub onto Lancelot Clark Storth and the summit of Hutton Roof Crags, and on to Blasterfoot Gap and down to Hutton Roof. The last 2 miles are through farmland to High Biggins and on to Kirkby Lonsdale.
The C walk will be led by Roger. Approximately 5 ½ miles and 250 feet of ascent.
The walk is a linear from Barbon to Kirkby Lonsdale. Starting at Hodge Bridge near Barbon we go along paths and lanes to Beckfoot Farm, Lowfields Lane and to Casterton by the church. From there along a quiet lane to Crag House, Laitha Lane and down to Devils Bridge followed by a riverside walk into Kirkby Lonsdale. There are 3 stiles.
