Walks ending at Kirkby Lonsdale and Wray 26th November 2023
We have had to change the A & B walks, because the earlier finish time would clash with Sunday lunch at both the cafe and pub in Wray. They can accommodate one group (the C's), but not all three. So, the A's & B's will finish at Kirkby Lonsdale. We will then go to pick up the C's from Wray, which is only a few minutes from Hornby, and our Christmas Meal.
Lesley is leading the A walk. It is approximately 1500 ft and 9 ½ miles.
Starting from near Jct 36 Auction Mart, we walk to the canal, crossing an awkward stile, to Nook Bridge. We take a path around Farleton Knott & then up onto Farleton Knott via a goodish path which is slightly undulating & then taking another path around to the cairn. We pick up a path going down Holme Park Fell & and then a path towards Hutton Roof via The Rake and then onto Kirkby Lonsdale via road & paths!!!
An enjoyable walk with some good views if no rain & cloud!!!
David is leading the B walk. It is approximately 1100 ft and under 8 miles.
Beginning two minutes down the road from the A's, we will climb Farleton Knott from Holme Park Farm, possibly reaching the cairn before the A's. Then we will take a grassy path towards Hutton Roof Crags, then reach the Rake (will we meet the A's again?). Our path into Kirkby Lonsdale will include a mile along Gallowber Lane from Hutton Roof rather than the fields.
Jeff is leading the C walk. It is approximately 6 ½ miles, and on the flat.
The walk begins in Melling following the railway lines until we reach the bridge going over the Old Lune tributary. Then across fields with views over to Arkholme and Hornby Castle woods, past Holme Head farm to reach Gressingham bridge and Gressingham Woods. Following alongside the river Lune and past Priory Farm to Wenning Foot, we then follow the river Wenning to Hornby Bridge. We will enter Hornby Castle estate land on a good track reaching another river, the Hindburn. The walk ends at the tea rooms on the left or back through the village to the George and Dragon pub.
