Walks ending at Pooley Bridge 4th August 2024

The A walk will be led by Andy and is about 11 miles and 2000 feet.

This walk begins in Patterdale and passes up Boredale Hause to the long ridge of Beda Fell. After crossing the summit and then Winter Crag, the path drops down to the small church of St Martin’s situated in the remote and pretty valley of Martindale.  Here the ascent begins to Steel Knotts and the rocky outcrop of Pikeawassa (which Wainwright claims may be the sharpest summit in Lakeland). The route then takes us down to Howtown where hopefully we can resist the temptation to catch the steamer back to Pooley Bridge – and instead take a pleasant 4 mile stroll along the eastern side of Ullswater to finish the walk.

Pooley Bridge A Walk
Pooley Bridge B Walk

The B walk will be led by Lesley and is about 9 miles and 1300–1400 feet.

Starting from Aira Force, we go through the falls to the top falls (looking out for red squirrels on the way). Then we turn and follow the path going towards Green Hill & the Memorial Seat (our highest point), with a superb view of Ullswater. We'll then wind our way through to Swinburn's Park passing Little Meldrum, Bennethead, Wreay, Waterfoot Hotel & farm and down to the main road. Crossing the road we walk into Pooley Bridge village.

The C walk will be led by Ray and is about 6 miles and 700 feet. Starting in Pooley Bridge we follow the south shore of Ullswater to Waterside House. Next, we climb past Seat Farm and Crook-a-dyke to Auterstone Wood. There we pick up a bridleway going east towards the stone circle at The Cockpit. This part of the route gives great views of Ullswater and the hills beyond. The path then descends down to Pooley Bridge via Roehead.
