Walks ending at Pooley Bridge 2nd August 2026

The A walk will be led by Glynis and is approximately 12 miles and 2000 feet.

The walk is a circular from Pooley Bridge.  We start on the Ullswater Way and keep close to the lake up to Howtown then continue to St Peter's Church.  From there we will climb Hallin Fell which is short and fairly steep but well worth the effort for the views on the way and from the top.  We descend towards Howtown Pier then take the path which goes up past Auterstone Wood and crosses Aik Beck to get to the Cockpit.  This is a stone circle which stands at the crossroads of two ancient trading routes.  From there it is an easy path back to Pooley Bridge.  

 

The B walk will be led by Paul and is approximately 8.5 miles and 1300 ft ascent (nothing steep)

We start from the pretty village of Askham, then ascend steadily onto the Askham Fells to the Cockpit stone circle for drinks (bring your own).  There follows a moderate climb up to White Knott, with good views over Ullswater for the next section ending on Arthur's Pike.  Here will be lunch.  That's all the climbing done with.  We then head back off the fell gently descending along easy paths down Lock Bank, with yet more cracking views over Ullswater, then down to the shore and along to Pooley Bridge (this bit sounds peaceful but there are some busy camp sites down there!).  Mainly grassy paths or stony tracks and no stiles.  

 

The C walk will be led by Phil and is just under 6.5 miles and 570 feet (slightly more descent)

The walk starts at Askham and goes up Askham Fell to the stone circle at The Cockpit . It then descends gently with great views as far as Auterstone Wood and then a little steeper down  to Thwaitehill  and then Seat Farm before reaching the lake road and then the path alongside the lake through the campsite on to Pooley Bridge.
