Walks ending at Seatoller 1st September 2024
We have had to change the finishing point of our Borrowdale walks because of renovations in the hotel we planned to use. So, we shall now end our walks a mile up the road, at the Yew Tree which is at the start of the road up the Honister Pass. The Yew Tree dates back to 1628 when it was used to house miners in the Honister mine. It's name is recalled by Wordsworth in a poem about 4 Yew trees.
The A walk is led by Andy and is approximately 11 miles and just under 3000 feet.
Beginning in Seatoller we have a short walk along the River Derwent before crossing Strands Bridge to begin our ascent up Thorneythwaite Fell and then the summit of Glaramara. This is roughly a climb of 2230 feet (mainly grassy) and should hopefully take us about 2 hours 30 mins. We then take an undulating path to Allen Crags with its wonderful views of Great Gable, Great End and the Langdale Pikes. Here we drop down to Sprinkling Tarn and if time permits the twin tops of Seathwaite Fell. The walk heads back to Seatoller via Stockley Bridge and Seathwaite Farm.
The B walk is led by Lesley and is approximately 8.6 miles and under 2000 feet.
A change from the advertised walk. From Strands Bridge we walk up the valley to Seathwaite and then onto Stockley Bridge (coffee stop). From here we take a long snaking path up (steady up) to Sprinkling Tarn (lunch stop) and then down to Styhead & Styhead Tarn with hopefully, some superb views! We then continue downwards on an undulating path following Styhead Gill, passing Taylorgill Force Waterfall and back down to Stockley Bridge (quite steep) and return on the path to Seathwaite & then onto Seatoller. Paths are relatively good as a lot of path restoration and conservation has taken place. We will take our time and take in the views!
The C walk is led by Dom and is approximately 6 miles and 500 feet.
This is a beautiful walk through the Borrowdale (Derwentwater) valley.
Starting at High Lodore, we will make our way around the southern edge of Derwentwater lake, with views of the lake and the fells beyond. We pick up the Cumbria Way and head towards Grange, with views of Castle Crag ahead. We are often close to the River Derwent and the going is a good bridleway - there are a couple of rocky sections, but help will be available if needed! From being beneath the high crags of Borrowdale, the views open out, especially towards Eagle Crag in the Stonethwaite valley. We come to the Youth Hostel (should be open for coffee, cake, beer) at Longthwaite. Beyond here we will have a short section of road walking before heading for the rendezvous at Seatoller via Folly Bridge.
