Walks ending at Thirlspot 3rd August 2025
The A walk will be led by Andy and is approximately 10 miles and 2600 feet.
The walk starts at Dunmail Raise and follows a stony path alongside Raise Beck with is cascading waterfalls which takes us up to Grisedale Tarn. From here we will take a fairly steep but pitched path up to Dollywaggon Pike. Then it is a fairly straightforward walk to Nethermost Pike with its dramatic views of Striding Edge, and then onto the summit of Helvellyn (the 3rd largest mountain in England at 3116 feet). Here we will begin our descent to Helvellyn Lower Man, taking us to the hause with Whiteside where we pick up the old pony route, down largely grassy slopes to Thirlspot.
The B walk will be led by Laureen and is approximately 8 miles and 1800 feet cumulative.
Starting from near Legburthwaite. We climb up Wren Crag which takes us onto Long band, the start of a wide undulating ridge taking over High Rigg, one of the smaller Wainwrights at under 1200 ft but offering excellent views of the surrounding mountain ranges and Thirlmere. Our descent is quite steep down to the youth centre, but we will take our time, then there will be an out and back over Low Rigg to Tewet Tarn. Our return will be at a lower level along the eastern side of High Rigg, looking out to St Johns Beck and St Johns in the Vale. One of our rest breaks will be at Low Bridge End farm which has tea rooms. Then we pick up the path around Great How, and back along the Lake paths to Thirlspot. The walk can have some boggy sections and some rocky sections and has been described as the Lake District in miniature. Wainwright described it as “a splendid little expedition admirably suited to old and rickety fell walkers long past their best’’ so we should be good to go!
The C walk will be led by Lesley and is approximately 6 ½ – 7 miles and 800 – 900 feet.
This is a circular starting from Thirlspot farm to go up the path towards Stanah, crossing Fisher Place Gill & then down into Stanah and Legburthwaite via the Green to the A591.
Crossing the road, we go around to the dam and onto the reservoir path back towards Dalehead Hall and onto Swirls car park. From there we turn for the return to Thirlspot. The walk includes undulating paths, which are rocky and uneven in places with three shortish climbs and lovely views.
