Walks ending at Braithwaite 27th April 2024

A 'D' walk is being offered in addition to the usual 3 walks.

Braithwaite is a couple miles from Keswick.

The A walk will be led by Graham. Approximately 11 miles and 2800ft.

We start half a mile on from Thornthwaite at Beckstones. Following the line of the beck we have a 1200ft climb to Barf, our first Wainwright of five. From Barf, a long and broad ridge takes in 3 more Wainwrights, Lords seat, Broom fell and Greystones. Then we drop into a wooded valley following forest tracks, followed by a steady climb up to Whinlatter top. A short steep descent takes us into Whinlatter Forest, passing the Visitor Centre and continuing the descent to Thornthwaite. From here we have a steady 30 min walk to Braithwaite.

The B walk will be led by Lesley. Approximately 8 miles and 2000 feet.

From Braithwaite, we go out to Little Braithwaite, then Uzzicar by the river path & onto Barrow which is quite a long ascent so we will take our time! From Barrow, we go to Barrow Door, Stile End, Low Moss & on to Outerside. After which we contour round a little way before descending to Coledale Beck & crossing at the ford. Fingers crossed that we have minimal rain between now & then! A good track is then followed above the beck with views of Kinn, back onto the Whinlatter Pass road, going down a short way before crossing a bridge which takes you to the Himalayas & winds our way back into Braithwaite.

The C and D walk will be led by Dominic. Part 1 of the C walk can be walked as a D walk.

Part 1: About 5 miles and 600 feet of ascent. We will leave the village of Braithwaite to explore Coledale. We will follow the valley up to its head with developing views of Stile End & Outerside to the south; and Force Crag ahead. We have time to learn a little about the industrial archaeology in upper Coledale and then return with wide views to the northern fells.

Part 2: (C walk only): a further 2 miles and 400 feet of ascent. We will follow a loop around some beautiful woodland on the edge of Braithwaite before returning to the village to visit the Orthodox Church, the Buddhist bridge and refreshments.
