Walks ending at Kendal 18th February 2024

All three of our walks are visiting Scout Scar, a long ridge to the west of Kendal. At the highest point is an unusual delightful place to sit down and have some refreshments. It is known as 'The mushroom'. Hilda has done some research: “It was built in 1912, as a memorial to King George v. and was restored in 1969 and then again in 2003 and is a Wainwright summit at 764 ft. 233 metres. Kendal sits at 185 metres above sea level".

Alan comments: “If the weather is kind there should be great views towards Morecambe Bay and surrounding Fells”.

Alan is leading the A walk. Approximately1000 ft and 12-13 miles.

Starting from the centre of Kendal up to Serpentine woods, Cunswick Fell and Scar, we walk the full length of Scout Scar, past Helsington Barrows, down to Helsington Church and Sizergh Castle. The return to Kendal follows the River Kent from Wilson's Place to Hawes Bridge where we cross the River Kent again.

Kate is leading the B walk. Approximately 900 ft and 8 ½ miles.

Starting at Nanny Pie Lane our walk takes you over Sizergh Fell, Helsington Barrows, Cunswick Fell and Scar, and Kendal Fell then through Serpentine Woods and down into Kendal.

Hilda is leading the C walk. Approximately 550 ft and 7 miles.

The walk will begin at Helsington Laithes towards the Brigsteer Road and onto Scout Scar and Bradleyfield along to Cunswick Fell and Scar. We descend into Kendal via Fellside through Serpentine Woods which was originally grazing land. The woods were opened in 1824 and laid out with paths in 1950 with an entry fee of 6d to use the 3 miles of paths but the charge was soon lifted and the area became free for all.
