Walks ending at Mungrisdale 14th April 2024
Most people only think of Skiddaw and Blencathra when thinking about the Northern Fells. By starting and finishing in Mungrisdale we are able to explore other Northern Fells, less popular but at least as good. Hope for good weather and bring your camera!
The B & C walks will visit Bowscale Tarn, once a favourite of the Victorians wanting a tour of the best of the Lakes, and to see the place where Wordsworth wrote that there were two immortal fish.
The A walk will be led by Andy. Approximately 12 miles and 2300 ft. 4 'Wainwrights'.
Mungrisdale Common may not be as grand and imposing as its loftier neighbours, but has a solitary beauty which is quite charming. The walk starts in the village of Mungrisdale and goes up Bannerdale with its impressive views of the Bannerdale Crags. After summiting Bowscale and Bannerdale Crags, the walk crosses over a grassy moor to seek the small piles of stones marking the top of Mungrisdale common. From here the walk heads to the rockier Glenderamackin col to start the descent to Mousthwaite Comb, where the final Wainwright of the day, Souther Fell, can be reached. From here it is a 30 minute descent to the Mill Inn.
The B walk will be led by David. Approximately 8 miles and 1700 ft. 2 'Wainwrights'.
The first third of the walk is the same as the C walk (read below); a long gentle climb to Bowscale Tarn. Where the C walk then goes downhill, the B walk climbs a further 700 feet (steep in part) above the tarn and onto Bowscale Fell. Then, a loop to Bannerdale Crags and back, descending on a long grassy track to Mungrisdale.
The C walk will be led by Tony. Approximately 7 miles and 1000 ft.
There is just one ascent which starts gradually with a steeper bit near to the tarn
We take the road north out of Mungrisdale to pass under Raven Craggs to Bowscale where we turn left on to the track up to Bowscale Tarn, the highest point of the walk. We descend to Roundhouse and then on to Swineside to take the lane to Mosedale and Low Mill, to pick up a field path to Bowscale. Then we retrace our route to Mungrisdale.
All walks subject to change (due to unforseen circumstances/weather).
