Walks ending at Orton 2nd March 2024
Orton is a delightful village in the Westmorland dales with gently rolling and lonely fells. It has a cafe (near the Church), and a pub, near where the coach will be parked at the end of our walks.
The A walk will be led by David and is approximately 11 miles and 1200 feet.
We begin at Newbiggin-on-Lune, with the C group close behind, walking some of the 'Coast to Coast' path, then part of the Dales Way and the Nature Reserve, passing the B group on the way. From there we make for the Monument above Orton Scar and down to Orton.
The B walk will be led by Lesley and is approximately 8-9 miles and 1100 feet.
Going from the centre of Orton over to Scar Side, up towards Beacon Hill & Thunder Stone through to Great Asby Scar Nature Reserve. We continue along Asby Winderwath Common eventually picking up the Dales High Way to reach Sunbiggin. Return to Orton.
The C walk will be led by John and Linda and is approximately 6-7 miles and 470 feet, mostly gentle undulation.
The route starts from Newbiggin-on-Lune, following behind the A group, walking in a north-westerly direction on High Lane, onto the Dales Highway and continuing across Ravenstonedale Moor with views of Sunbiggin Tarn to the north. Then we walk the same route as the Bs, past Sunbiggin farm, onto Knott Lane (adjacent to a Stone Circle), turning west across fields and into the village of Orton.
